Signs And Symptoms of Autistic Burnout
Experiences of autistic burnout vary as much as individuals themselves, however both through research and anecdotally we see a pattern of signs and symptoms that can support us in recognising burnout either in ourselves or others.
Foremost, exhaustion and loss of functioning in every day activities is described by autistic people as well as less tolerance of certain sensory input. The extent of each of these will vary from person to person.
Autistic burnout is a shutting down in order to self preserve and protect. Autistic burnout IS NOT refusal. It is a 'can't' not a 'won't'.

A blog taken from Kieran Rose (The Autistic Advocate).
An insight into the recognition and support of autistic burnout.
Research into autistic burnout is still very much in its infancy, with just a handful of research papers and only 1 focusing on autistic young people in particularly. And yet I experience many children as young as 4 years old in mental health crisis as a result of autistic burnout. The general consensus from research is that burnout is caused by the environment not being conducive to autistic neurology. There is also a strong pattern of a lack of empathy and understanding from non-autistic people and services. Therefore autistic people (including children) are not only unsupported by approaches taken to them while in burnout, but also potentially harmed further by the lack of knowledge of others. Conclusions of all the research papers include a need for more research! Conclusion from my work, show that improved awareness and acceptance of autistic burnout is paramount for the positive futures of autistic children.
