Young, Autistic & Burnt Out

Written with, and for, autistic children & young people

Jodie Clarke

I've spent so much time informing parents, carers, teachers, mental health practitioners and other adults, about burnout. And in doing so, I've realised that our young people need this information too. They need something written by and for them, to aid navigating the journey of burnout recovery.

The book includes the voices of 10 children and young people aged 6-17 years. Each one bravely offering insight into their own experience of burnout

Aimed at autistic young people, pre-teens and teens, this book guides autistic young people through recognising, understanding and recovering from autistic burnout. Importantly the book emphasises that autistic burnout is a result of the demands the world places on us and that its is is not our fault.

Have you ever felt like you can no longer face the day, can no longer put one foot in front of the other, can no longer get out of bed and get dressed, brush your teeth and leave the house? Your clothes feel ‘too much’, your brother chewing his cereal makes you want to explode or the busyness of the streets on the way to school suddenly feel stifling and claustrophobic.
Typically, people have the odd day like this, but being autistic means the world takes its toll on us in ways that so many others do not see or understand.
Sometimes those days, lead to weeks, lead to months….. if this is you or a loved one you could be facing autistic burnout

Hear me talking through the parts of the book here

"I bought Young, Autistic & Burnt Out for myself, but after my daughter overheard me talking about it, she asked me to read it. I’m so glad she did!"

"The book is written in small, bite-sized sections, making it incredibly easy to read and digest, even when life feels overwhelming."

"What I appreciate most is how it reassures us that we’re not alone in this journey.

It’s not just a resource but a comforting reminder that others share similar challenges and emotions. Highly recommend for anyone looking to better understand autism and burn out from an authentic, relatable perspective!!"

"It really is something to hear autistic young people speak about their experiences with autistic burnout. This book is an incredibly insightful read, albeit heartbreaking at times."

Collaborating with Autistic Young People

As well as the voices within the book, our front cover was designed and drawn by Laila aged 14years and is titled 'Broken Wings'

"Thank you Jodie and all the young people that put together this wonderful resource - I hope it lands in every home, educational setting and organisation."

"Thank you for writing and bringing other young people together to author this book. It had been a brilliant tool to enable the conversation and we will no doubt be reading it again soon."

"Don’t wait for burnout to read this, it should be handed out with a diagnosis as a preventative measure. Thrilled to be able to recommend this to parents both professionally and personally."

"Yet another fabulous book from Jodie. Published at the perfect time for where we're at in our family.

Easy to read and understand, and the voices of the young people are superbly represented.

You won't regret buying this at all."
